Pictures Not Homes

Ian Dawson and Louisa Minkin began recording the sequestering and demolition of the Aylesbury Estate in the spring of 2014.

We got into Taplow House’s row of forgotten shops – a cab office, a laundrette, a butcher’s - a street in the sky that was closed up in the early seventies. We were intent on recording the site before it was lost. Over a ten-day period, with the help of Gareth Beale, Nicole Beale and Paul Reilly, we attempted to apply contemporary archaeological recording practices to the site; new vision technologies such as photogrammetry, reflectance transformation imaging [RTI] and 3D scanning. Our archaeological colleagues referred to our recording attempts at Taplow House as ‘dirty RTI’.

Constructing the buildings in 3D software produced ruined monuments from the future, unstable depopulated sites, ‘inadequate descriptive systems’ of expropriation and dispossession.

The digital capture files were output into diverse forms: physicalised as additive manufactured objects and as print onto rigid and soft substrates, built into barricades and sandbags. Virtual forms were subjected to game engine physics, output as Regeneration Sunsets and as slow-time RTI still lives.

The work was first exhibited at ASC in its newly inaugurated space. We worked with the local youth group to make their own show from the ruins of ours. The exhibition was refigured in the Winchester Gallery. Francis Summers subsequently invited us to show the work at Centre Romantsou in Athens in 2017 and his poem 'A is for Frontline" was woven in to the install. Objects from the project were exhibited at Annihilation Event and Camberwell Arts Festival the same year.

A symposium organised by the AMT Research Group took place at WSA and these themes were developed for a paper at the Nordic Geographers Conference in Stockholm 2018. Publication in the Journal Philosophy of Photography is forthcoming.
